James Maynard and William F. Carl originated the notion of establishing a restaurant in the year 1971, which was named as Golden Corral after repeatedly failing to procure a franchise for other restaurant chains. One year later in 1973, the company was incorporated and opened the first Golden Corral Family Steak House on January 3, 1973 in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
Since then, there was no looking back; the company has expanded to over 500 locations throughout the United States of America, out of which the company itself owns only a hundred of them. The rest over 400 eateries are franchised. Nearly 500 among these locations with combined gross sales of over $1.53 billion USD were already set and running by the year 1987. Later, the company grew to over 9000 employees by the year 2014.
The early menu consisted of meat and steaks; however, with the nationwide concerns of red meat and the falling sales, they decided to add salad bars to their menu. The company also licensed around 55 locations to their most capable managers. In 1991, the Golden Corral opened the first seven “Metro Market” restaurants with 10,000 sq. ft. space and accommodating capacity of approximately 450 customers.
The Brass Bell Bakery of the restaurant also added the ‘Brass Bell’ that rang every fifteen minutes intimating the customers of the fresh arrival of pastries, breads and rolls. An expansion to the restaurant’s buffet, named as “Golden Choice Buffet” introduced along with new locations building up in Oklahoma, New Mexico, Texas and North Carolina moved the corporation from small towns to metropolitan cities and exceeding the gross sales as never before.
Despite of a competitive hospitality marketplace, this food place with innovative ideas and concepts has set a benchmark for the food industry. For instance, the Strata concept has gained huge success by offering a wide range of eatables including omelets; char-boiled steaks; Belgian waffles and much more. The ambience is commendable because of its reserve parking and the “To Go Box” facility.
The restaurant has also gained popularity because of their wide array of food menu; affordable prices and their humanitarian activities, most noted between 2001 and 2007. The buffet breakfast and lunch here costs just over $8.00 and is available until 11am on weekends and Monday to Saturday respectively.
